Building, Their Life

A construction site is a noisy place, filled with the sounds of saws, hammers, and drills. It can also be a crowded place, cluttered with ladders, equipment and building supplies.
Peter Crowley and his guide dog, Trinity, don't seem at all fazed by the noise and disarray. Trinity guides Peter around ladders and other obstacles while he memorizes the layout of the site. Peter is a Project manager for the New York State Dormitory Authority. He oversees the design, construction and refurbishing of stores and cafeterias which are operated by blind vendors. His goal is to make the sites "user friendly" for everyone, including people who are visually impaired. The job requires him to visit store locations all across the state. With Trinity as his guide, Peter says he can travel anywhere he needs to go "with no second thoughts or stress."
Because of his busy schedule, Peter says the hometown training offered by Freedom Guide Dogs was "absolutely a must." He says he feels very confident and comfortable with Trinity. "Freedom has very high expectations of their dogs, and it shows in their performance."

When he's not at work, Peter enjoys spending time with his family and participating in outdoor activities. He sails, downhill skies, and helps coach the soccer teams on which his son plays. Seven years ago he was a member of a team of climbers who reached the top of Mount Kilimangaro. Two years ago he piloted his own kayak down the Hudson river. This coming September he hopes to travel to Europe with friends and make a solo kayak trip across the English Channel.

Peter and Trinity make a great team. We wish them the best of luck at whatever new challenges they decide to take on next!!

Trinity was a pup we wrote about, about two years ago when she was born. As you may remember a group of teens from the Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Group, in Pottesville PA, had a rock-a-thon to raise money to name a puppy. We thank the group again and we are glad to have a happy ending for their long project.

New Kennel Project

Work is continuing on the fund-raising for our new kennel/property acquisitions. The drawing is a sketch of what the finished kennel is projected to like.

As you can see from the "Dog Bone" the funding is still coming in for this project. The solid coloring is the amount of money "in the bank," the shaded is the amount promised for the matching grant. Our board of Directors gave $3000. Our Holiday appeal supplied $6000. the william Gundry Broughton Charitable Private Foundation gave a grant worth $10,000. Utica National Insurance Foundation sent a grant for $5,000.

The grants and donations for the project are in a special fund. The Community Foundation of Oneida and

Herkimer County has offered us a matching grant of $75,000. What this means is when we receive $75,000 from other sources, they will match it with their money.

Thank You Supporters

Thank you to all the individuals, service clubs, and Foundations who have donated to Freedom Guide Dogs and have made it possible for us to place over 1000 working guide dogs. As a 501 (c) (3), who does not charge its recipients, we cannot operate without these donations. Your donations, large and small, go directly towards the program.
Though we always need the large donations to help with the large expenses we are also grateful for the many individuals who send what they can either directly or through payroll contributions. Each ten dollar donation will purchase a dog brush and food bowl. A fifteen dollar donation will purchase a micro-chip ID number, and the list goes on. The large grants help with the vehicle purchases, new training facility, veterinarian expenses etc.

Though the list of individuals is lengthy, we would like to acknowledge the grants recently received: the Sara Chait Memorial Foundation, Pearl Vision Foundation, Bannerot-Lappe Foundation, The Assistance dog Campaign and The Vidda Foundation. In addition we would like to extend a thank you to Matthew S. Pica General Manager of the Four Points Sheraton, Rochester, New York for assistance in lodging throughout  our service region.

Give A Gift Of Independence

Your contribution to Freedom Guide Dogs means someone's freedom. All funds are applied to provide highly trained guide dogs to men and women who are blind. There is no charge to the client for the trained guide, or the equipment that is placed with the guide. Freedom Guide Dogs is a 501(c)(3), non for profit charity that does not receive any funding from the government, or insurance. Your contribution will go a long ways in helping us continue to serve the blind through our “Hometown Training”.
