The Foster Puppy Program

Yellow lab puppy in harness

One of the most exciting ways to become a part of the Freedom Guide Dog ministry is to raise a puppy that will be used as a guide dog! Puppy Raisers are needed to:

  • Raise the pup to be a well behaved dog (no jumping or begging)
  • Walk on a leash
  • Housebreak
  • Expose to the outside world (take the puppy to stores, stairs, children, traffic, the activity in town, church, etc.)
  • Experience other animals (dogs, birds, cats etc.)
We ask the Puppy Raisers to pay for the dog food for the pup for the time they have them (usually a year or so). This donation can be used as a tax write-off as it is a donation to a not-for-profit organization.

Freedom Guide Dogs will pay for any medical expenses that may come up. We will administer all the necessary shots free of charge to the puppy raiser. (A Veterinarian needs to give the Rabies shot as required by NYS) Any wormings or ear problems etc. will be taken care of, free of charge from the Freedom Guide Dogs kennel. All dogs will be neutered by a Vet.

The coat is used when the puppy is out socializing. Periodically we meet with the puppy raisers to see how things are going and to offer any advice or help that may be needed.
After the puppy returns toFreedom Guide Dogs, completes the guide dog training, and is placed with a blind person, the raiser receives a large photograph of their dog at work with his/her new master. If, by chance, the dog does not make it as a guide dog, the raiser has first option to take the dog as a pet.

Freedom Guide Dogs also provides kennel service and will board the puppy if the raiser is out of town and does not plan to bring the puppy with them.
